Changes in the Living Room

August 19, 2013 by 23 Comments

Hello dear friends!  I hope you had a great weekend – besides some shopping on Saturday I also visited a couple of estate sales on Friday. I’ve been thinking about our living room lately and how it’s time for a change. I would like to switch the coffee table to a larger size, round or square and dark.  With that in mind, I’ve been looking on Craigslist for a traditional coffee or side table in dark wood with a little flair, like caning or bamboo.  Following are three images I found on Pinterest.

After some fun inspiration on Pinterest I set out to go look and see what the estate sales had to offer. Oh, in fact the picture of  the teal table reminded me so much of a table we used to own in the late 70′s, our’s wasn’t painted though. Okay, here is my latest find that followed me home from the sale:

side table

Nice appearance, all wood and the caning was still in tact.  It also has a glass insert which I removed and cleaned.  The table was cleaned with Murphy Oil Soap and Wood Stain was used to touch up small scratches at the bottom of the table legs.

After all of the cleaning and touch-up I brought her inside and placed her next to the sofa.  I changed out the small round table that was there, it has a different spot in the house.

I like the detail and texture of the cane and the simple lines of the table.

Maybe I should have painted the table a totally “cool” color,  but we’re pretty traditional around here…so it will stay as is. But I’m thinking about painting or replacing the lamp. Hmmm…  The table was a good deal, I’m so glad I went back to the sale a second time and got the table for half price.  It is a nice size and I think we’ll enjoy it for a long time.   Now I’m on a mission to find a coffee table, wish me luck.  It may take a while though.

Thanks for stopping by y’all !

Oh wow!! Love the table but you know what?? I was admiring how really cool your lamp is. Like a piece of rustic pottery. It looks so good with the accessories and crisp white shade. But you have permission to paint :-). I do love spray paint and have been toying with spraying my 80′s fake (?) brass floor lamp but I’m afraid ill jinx it and it will stop working!!!
    Have a good week

Definitely a super buy! I have mostly stained wood tables too. I like them and when the painted wood phase is over we’ll be back in style!

Love the lamp! Change the shade if your itching for a switch (maybe a geometric patterned drum shade?) but the base is lovely. Your new table is gorgeous and a true classic.

  13. That is a lovely table and even better that you got it for a great price. I like a mix of wood finishes and painted pieces. Good luck on your coffee table search.

That is a great table. I wouldn’t paint it either. I am probably the only blogger in the universe who has not tried chalk paint and I don’t intend to try it.
Your vignette is perfect and I love the color of the lamp. Your table and lamp are the perfect transition into fall.
