Wintery Whimsy Terrarium

January 3, 2013 by 51 Comments

How about gift-cards, aren’t they just the best?  I received a couple of them and yesterday I decided to go shopping at Dillard’s and Hobby Lobby.  Both stores had great sales with additional discounts at Dillard’s what a fun treat!   I’ll share with you what I bought a Hobby Lobby.

The entry-table started looking a little bare after the Holidays and so it was time to create a wintery looking vignette or scape.   Whimsical may be the best word to describe it.

Entry Table Vignette The terrarium was purchased at Hobby Lobby, I’m so excited about this one…can’t wait to use it with plants in the near future, maybe fill it with hearts for Valentine? or how about Spring and Easter Decorations? The possibilities are endless.  For now, it is filled with random wintery looking stuff.  The other items displayed on the table I had on hand.  The large cream vase in the center of the table is pretty much a staple item in this spot, I like the color and texture of the vase. It is filled with dried branches most of the time, faux or real.  A small grey hurricane lantern (wire) is filled with taper candles,  and the white frame toward the back holds a simple botanical print. The colors of this scape are neutral, cream, white and grey….just like a cold winter day.

Entry Table Vignette 1 The terrarium holds two pine-cones and some twigs that were spray-painted white,  a white-washed wooden heart and wiry ball (ornaments – clearance items), a vintage ornament in front and a small pewter pitcher holding the wiry ball. Like I said…random stuff.

Entry Table Vignette 3 Another look at the pine-cones inside the terrarium….WINTER!

Don’t be surprised if I tweak this arrangement in a week or two…I think I’ll have fun with it!

How are you doing?  How do you decorate for winter?

I’m so glad you stopped by,  please come back real soon!

I have a little terrarium similar to yours too. You will have so much fun with it! Often times I just have cups and saucers in mine. They just seem at home and so pretty in there.

Love that small terrarium! I am working on some wintery decorating as well, the house just feels too bare when the Christmas comes down. :)

Jenna, I agree, the house feels bare when Christmas comes down. Time to put up a little wintery decor. Thanks for stopping by!

I was just at Hobby Lobby yesterday & I missed that great terrarium!! I, too, am looking for something different to replace all the Christmas decorations. But I am looking for some green, like in greenery. Am making more topiaries, but will look for that terrarium & LOVE the idea of cups & saucers in there!

Karen, sounds like you enjoy crafting…making topiaries. Maybe you’ll find the terrarium next time and get to play with it!

  4. Hi Moni, Just inspired by your lovely settings for winter. Summer here in Australia and very hot. I am trying to get a Mens shed volunteers group to make me similar timber trees for next Christmas as my ideas reach out for gift giving for our sad ladies that come for urgent rescue from domestic violence. I thought I could do a cheer up parcel for ladies, starting early this year to prepare my gifts for them.I am also having my own set. The white sketch in white frame may just get me to go back to doing my sketching that I learnt from a clever artist here in Maitland. Keep inspiring me my dear girl, Hugs Mary

    Hi Moni,
Loved what you did with your terrarium, so cute! Believe it or not I have been looking to see what people are doing with them as a friend gave me one just like yours for Christmas.
Pretty much all I have seen have plants in them, and I was
hoping to find a few that were decorated in other ways just like yours, saw one other and it had miniature doll furniture in it, but it was too small to see it really, so thanks for your posts, sometimes you just need to see something to get
your creative juices flowing, and I had never seen them before, but love it………..
Yes, I decorate for Winter and I need to get busy, cause I
just got my christmas stuff down. lol
You have a great week hon,
    Blessings, Nellie

Well no wonder this was such a popular post Moni! I love that little terrarium, and you’re right, it will be fun to decorate it all through the year. So many great ideas. And I really like the cream vase too…what great texture! It reminds me of an artichoke. :) But I would use it as a staple too. I don’t have a lot of white ware, but I’m always keeping my eye out for it. I guess I don’t go shopping enough. :| Glad to hear your garage sale went well. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

    Debbie
